If you’re anything like me, the last time you actually cracked open a phonebook, “social networking” required leaving your home and the “Blogosphere” was just a twinkle in the eye of the Intarweb. Yet, with the irritating faithfulness reserved only for those things in life you really wished would go away, the Phone Book appears, year after year, plastic-sheathed and anxious to be useless. To illust
rate my point, I reference the picture that accompanies this article. This photo is of one of FOUR bins at Chad’s condo today. The blue bins. The tall ones. All full of phone books. All from TODAY. This prompted us to write this blog ‘cuz it made us die a little inside. So here are instructions for opting out of phone book deliveries.

A Portland, Oregon Web host, Canvas Dreams provides sustainable, no-oversell, ethical hosting services for businesses, non-profits, and personal needs. We are committed to providing the highest quality service and caring customer support to help our clients achieve their goals, while in doing so promote sustainable causes and encourage others to follow in this path.
The Change We Seek
Our mission is to utilize our company’s most precious resources – technology and knowledge – and apply them in a way not only to help our business achieve our sustainability goals, but also improve the quality of life for our clients, the environmental impact of their businesses, and bring about greater social and environmental stewardship in the way their businesses are conducted.
By actively promoting and demonstrating our sustainability program, developing newer and more efficient technologies that have a real and positive impact on how our clients operate their businesses, and openly championing environmental responsibility and sustainability in our business community and the larger industry as a whole, we aim to lead others to follow in our path and create measurable, positive change in the world.
Why we became a B Corporation
Canvas Dreams chose to become a B Corporation for a simple reason: It separates the walkers from the talkers. With greenwashing and misleading tactics running rampant in our industry, the external certification and responsible, legal framework reinforced by becoming a B Corporation were components we immediately supported. As a B Corporation, we can now demonstrate transparency in how we operate and credibility in our convictions, which in our industry are hard to come by.

Canvas Dreams, LLC, a sustainable Web host based in Portland, Oregon, is pleased to announce it is now a Certified B Corporation.
Though not a legally-recognized legal structure, B Corporations operate on the basis of ethics and transparency. Enforced through legal verbiage in their Articles of Incorporation and Operating Agreement, a B Corporaton’s company management must adhere to principles of ethics, honesty, and integrity in their decision-making processes and activities within the company.

Beyond this, we now also have externally certified metrics to demonstrate our commitment to ethical behavior with transparency”.

This is a public service announcement from Canvas Dreams, LLC. Please pass this on to anyone you know involved in relief and recovery efforts for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.
We at Canvas Dreams were shocked by the extent of devastation in Haiti and would like to offer our services to assist in the humanitarian efforts. Though much of the network infrastructure in Haiti has been severely compromised, any effort to connect people within and outside of the country can make a difference.
Canvas Dreams is therefore offering free hosting for any Web site involved in Haiti humanitarian relief efforts. An example would be a non-profit with a Web site accepting PayPal/credit card payment donations, an online forum for family or friends of victims in Haiti to connect with missing loved ones, or informational Web sites instructing how people can get involved in the relief effort. Those are simply examples, and we will host any Web site in any way related to helping the devastation in Haiti.
Please contact Canvas Dreams toll-free at 800.574.4299, x1 for Sales, to speak with a representative.
Thank you,
David Anderson Principal, Canvas Dreams, LLC

For the first time ever, Canvas Dreams exhibited at the Green Festival in San Francisco, Nov. 13-15, 2009, part of a Twitter-rich road trip.
Canvas Dreams’ voyage to San Francisco and back was an overwhelming success. In addition to the wonderful opportunity of meeting Laura Flanders, we were reviewed by the New York Times and TreeHugger.com. Additionally, lots of Green Business Network members personally sought us out. We are so glad to have been able to participate in this event.
David Anderson, Principal of Canvas Dreams wrote up his thoughts on the trip. You can read a PDF of his article, “The 2009 San Francisco Green Festival: A Path To Sustainability”, by clicking here.

There are so many wonderful, free WordPress templates out there that it can actually be overwhelming when you know precisely what you’re looking for. Sure, hours of mind-numbing google surfing can be fun, but we figured that you might appreciate a heads up on some eco-specific themes available out there on the web. We gathered up a few that we like to get you started.
Remember, templates are customizable. If you like the bones of a template, but not the graphics, we can always help you adjust it to your liking. Just contact us!
1) Eco Green Template
We like this template because of its special attention to social networking. For any steady blogger, or for any organization or business for that matter, social networking is a key piece of spreading the word about what you’re up to. This template puts you front and center and encourages folks to engage with you in multiple arenas. Preview and Download here: Eco Green
2) 100 Recycle 1.0
100 Recycle 1.0 is a great combination of city grit and eco-friendliness. It would be a great theme for anyone working in (obviously) recycling, or possibly land re-use, sustainable cityscaping or urban gardening. Preview and Download here: 100 Recycle 1.0
3) Earth Day WordPress Template
The Earth Day theme is excellent for those working directly in nature, or in forestation, urban renewal, gardening, etc. May be a tad too ornate for some, but remember you can always swap out the background for an image of your own choosing. Preview and Download here: Earth Day
4) Simplou Template
Simplou is a clean, green, 2-column, widget-ready template that is perfect for all manner of green-focused folks. The sidebar is well-organized and expandable, and the content area is clean and well-presented. Preview and Download here: Simplou Free WordPress Template
5) Eco Nature Base Template
Eco Nature Base is a 2-column wordpress theme with an insinuated cloud/sky/grass theme. The pleasant gradients provide a clean look and feel without overpowering the content, and allows it to be highly suitable for anyone that’s even vaguely focused on/around the environment. Preview and Download here: Eco Nature Base Free WordPress Template
6) Aqua Green WordPress Template
Aqua Green is a clean, professional, 2-column template that has the ability to lend itself to nearly any environmental focus. It’s one of the more professional themes we’ve presented, and would be perfect for those whose content is as much head as heart. Preview and Download here: Aqua Green Free WordPress Template
7) Live Green WordPress Template
Live Green is a darker, earthier template with a leaf theme. 2 columns, with clever outcroppings at each header. The protruding leaf may make this template slightly harder to customize, but a capable designer can surely help. Preview and Download here: Live Green Free WordPress Template
8 ) Metamorph Hills WordPress Template
Metamorph Hills is green, both figuratively and literally — and has a wonderful large photo area that you can use as-is, or replace with your own custom image. This template is 2-columns and widget-ready with plenty of room to display pages and categories. Preview and Download here: Metamorph Hills Free WordPress Template
9) Misty Look WordPress Template
Misty Look is an incredibly clean template, and an old favorite of many folks. Because it is so clean, it is incredibly customizable. Replacing the header image can change the vibe of the entire template. This makes it perfect for everyone, green or not. And if you don’t want to change the header, Preview and Download here: Misty Look Free WordPress Template
10) Cutline WordPress Template
Cutline is another old favorite, for many of the same reasons as Misty above. But in addition to all the benefits already described, Cutline also has some fairly steady development, and has released multiple variations (2 and 3 columns, left and right, as well as color variations) so it’s even more flexible. Preview and Download here: Cutline Free WordPress Template
We hope you found something here to your liking! If not, we’re sure there are plenty more where these came from. And if you need custom wordpress template creation, just contact us and we can help you get started!
Since the news broke that Sigg and Laken, manufacturers of metal drinking containers, knowingly sold containers with BPA in their liner, the drinking bottle industry has been scrambling, and a lot of people are upset.
At the same time, we have stayed in close contact with one of our customers, Klean Kanteen. Simply put, they’ve been slammed with traffic, from people who have just received the rude awakening about Sigg and are now looking to switch to a BPA-free alternative, and fast.
Klean Kanteen has always used 18/8 stainless steel in their bottles, and never use BPA. Their products are fantastic, right down to their child sippy cups, and we’re thrilled to be their Web host of choice, as well as support other online needs.
We don’t often give public testimonials, but we’re making an exception because we know how important the issue of BPA to so many of our customers.
We hope you’ll take the time to visit http://www.kleankanteen.com, if you haven’t already, and take a look at their great offerings.
Best regards,
David Anderson

It may sound funny, but “organic SEO” is a real term and completely unrelated to the green/organic/sustainable movement.
The concept behind “organic SEO” is one which occurs naturally (not through automated or computer driven analyses and procedures, or paid advertising). The idea is that as a Web site grows and its content becomes richer, the site grows and along with it, the importance/value of its keywords and terms. This is as opposed to manufacturing thousands of pages with keyword-slammed content in hopes of artificially boosting the SEO of the site.
Setting up a Web site structure in the first place to allow for growth, such as sections (imagine a newspaper or journal) which can expand to include hundreds of articles written over time, is one such example of how organic SEO can be accomplished. With all the content tying together, the Web site’s overall pagerank and content value will naturally increase.
Pagerank, as Google defines it, is largely driven by the number of pages linking to pages of your site. So as content increases on your site, and the value of that content increases, more people will be likely to link to pages containing good content. This all happens not through automated processes, but a natural or organic method of time, viral interest, and word-of-mouth.
There’s the analogy — organic and viral. It implies a natural progression that occurs through just doing the right thing, and doing it consistently: providing good, new, fresh, interesting content for your readership.
